MEXICO CITY Five Mexican activists who are promoting the use of condoms and HIV testing will leave this capital on a tour through Central America on board an SUV named Condonmovil (condom-mobile).
The 35-day tour will head first for the southern Mexican state of Chiapas and then will continue on to Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama, Polo Gomez, one of the coordinators, told Efe.
The tour will coincide with the 1st Central American Summit on Rapid HIV Testing, set for April 27-28 in Guatemala City.
Gomez said that the Condonmovil tour, which will cost about 300,000 pesos ($23,000) is being sponsored by the U.S.-based Aids Health Care Foundation and the Mexican organizations Colectivo Sol and Letra S.
Among the people traveling along with Condonmovil will be journalist Mario Reyes, from the Notiese alternative news agency, who will collect people’s statements on the tour with the aim of later writing a book about the experience.
The objective of the trip through the region is to promote the timely detection of HIV/AIDS through use of free, confidential, anonymous and completely voluntary rapid testing.
Built in 1998, the Condonmovil team provides information on the prevention of HIV/AIDS, distributes free materials to the public and sells condoms at low prices.
